Research on Demand

As a national source of information on public arts funding, NASAA provides a knowledge network and fact base to help state arts agencies make informed policy decisions and put their own state’s needs and experiences in context. Providing customized responses to member questions is a hallmark of NASAA. This new column offers specific examples of the NASAA research services available and shows how they can be customized to meet your needs.

Funding and Grant-Making Reports

Customized for each state arts agency, funding and grant-making reports compare an agency’s funding and grant making over time and/or against their peers. Members use these reports to provide an overview of the SAA for council meetings, strategic planning sessions and legislative testimony.

Review a sample funding and grant-making report. Below, excerpts from the sample report offer further explanation.

As a part of these reports, many agencies request a funding history, such as the one shown here. NASAA maintains appropriations records for all SAAs from 1969 to the present.

To provide context for their appropriations history, an SAA may find it useful to benchmark funding changes against other state arts agencies in the region or the nation.

Grant-making data can be examined in many different ways, including by recipient type, as shown here. NASAA maintains grant statistics for SAAs going back to the early 1980s.
