New Creative Economy State Profiles

NASAA has refreshed our Creative Economy State Profiles with the new 2023 data on arts and cultural production, jobs and compensation. Produced in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), this interactive dashboard provides comprehensive insights into the creative economy of 50 states and the District of Columbia. The resource uses the Arts and Cultural Production Satellite Account—an authoritative measurement of the value produced by the creative economy—published by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis in partnership with the NEA.

The 2023 figures reveal that arts and cultural production contributed $1.17 trillion in value added to the U.S. economy, representing a 6.6% real (inflation-adjusted) increase, while supporting 5.4 million jobs. These figures provide critical context for understanding the arts sector’s ongoing recovery and adaptation in the postpandemic environment.

As part of NASAA’s resource collection for interpreting and sharing accurate creative economy research and data, the Creative Economy State Profiles are designed to help you communicate your state’s unique economic narrative to key stakeholders by highlighting:

  • arts and cultural production’s economic impact in your state and the nation
  • creative industry employment trends
  • industry contribution and compensation shifts
  • profiles of arts and culture alongside other key industry sectors in your state (mining, agriculture, construction, retail and more)
  • regional data illustrating how your state compares to your neighbors
  • creative economy performance over time
  • high-performing creative industries in your state

We invite you to explore the updated profiles to see how the creative economy is performing in your state. To learn more about using this resource in your state’s context, please contact Mohja Rhoads or Nakyung Rhee.
