Make the Most of Your Time at NASAA Assembly 2026: Experience D.C.!

NASAA Assembly 2026 is about connecting with colleagues, exchanging ideas and exploring what’s next for the arts, but there’s also plenty to discover beyond the conference agenda. While you’re in D.C., set aside some time to explore the city’s arts and cultural sites to see firsthand how artists, cultural organizations, government agencies and community partners are shaping a vibrant creative community. Whether you have an hour between sessions or an evening to explore, consider adding one of these arts-focused experiences to your Assembly itinerary.

• Visit a Museum
  Washington is home to plentiful museums, galleries and cultural institutions. Choose one that sparks your interest and spend some time exploring. The National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, National Portrait Gallery and Smithsonian American Art Museum are just a few options.
  Assembly-week opportunity: On Thursday, October 8, the National Gallery of Art hosts National Gallery Nights: Monster Mash from 6:00–9:00 p.m. The free after-hours program features live music, art making, pop-up experiences and a Halloween-inspired take on the collection. Registration is required through a lottery, which opens September 28.

• Explore Historic Spaces
  D.C.’s historic spaces offer another way to experience the intersection of art, culture, history and civic life. The Penn Quarter/Downtown Arts Corridor is a walkable district that brings together museums, theatres, restaurants and public spaces in a way that supports spontaneous exploration and connection. The area offers an accessible environment for attendees to experience the city together in between formal sessions. 

• Catch a Performance
  If you’re feeling a little dramatic, check out what’s onstage while you’re in town. Washington’s performing arts scene includes theatre, dance, music and more, with venues ranging from major national institutions to intimate neighborhood spaces.
  Assembly-week opportunity: October 8 is opening night for Frida…A Self Portrait at Shakespeare Theatre Company. If you enjoy indie music, check out the band Bright Eyes, playing on October 9 at the 9:30 Club.

Tip: Check schedules and ticket availability before you arrive. October is a busy time for the city’s cultural calendar.
