Creative Economy State Profiles Update with 2022 Data

NASAA has updated our Creative Economy State Profiles with new 2022 data on arts and cultural production, jobs and compensation. Produced in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the interactive dashboard presents detailed information about the creative economy in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The dashboard uses data from the Arts and Cultural Production Satellite Account, an authoritative source on the value of creative economy, published by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis in partnership with the NEA.

In 2022, arts and cultural production contributed over $1.1 trillion in value added to the U.S. economy (a 4.8% increase in inflation-adjusted dollars) and supported 5.2 million jobs. The 2022 data also provides insights into the ongoing recovery of the arts sector post-COVID-19.

As part of NASAA’s growing suite of resources available to help you understand and communicate accurate data and research about the creative economy, the interactive Creative Economy State Profiles are designed to assist you in exploring and sharing your state’s unique economic story with key decision makers. Use the Creative Economy State Profiles to understand:

  • the total value of arts and cultural production in every state, as well as the nation
  • total employment and compensation associated with arts and cultural production, by state and nationally
  • profiles of the arts and culture alongside other key industry sectors in your state (agriculture, construction, mining, retail and more)
  • regional views of how your state compares to your neighbors
  • creative economy performance versus overall state economic performance over time
  • high-performing creative industries in your state

Please explore the Creative Economy State Profiles to access the latest data, and don’t hesitate to contact Ryan Stubbs or Mohja Rhoads for help using this information in your state.

New Resources

NASAA recently released a new research report that examined 2001-2021 ACPSA data, Arts and Creativity Drive Economies and Build Resilience, on the arts and culture sector’s contributions to economic recovery. NEA Director of Research and Analysis Sunil Iyengar explored these findings in the recent blog post, Can the Arts Fortify State Economies in Times of Financial Crisis? Yes, Apparently. NASAA will be hosting a web seminar this month exploring this new research and the latest ACPSA data.

Additionally, this past year, NASAA explored potential updates to the Creative Economy State Profiles with input from state arts agencies and regional arts organizations. As a result of these conversations, the dashboards have been updated for improved accessibility, and NASAA published a new descriptive policy brief. Creative Economy Research: A Primer attempts to address some of challenges in communicating about the creative economy, such as definitional questions and using ACPSA data in conjunction with other research.
