South Carolina: Public Health Poster Series

“Plan Your Vaccine” illustration by artist Amiri Geuka Farris

Washing hands. Social distancing. Wearing masks. Self-care. Loving and thanking community. Getting vaccinated. These are all parts of public health messaging that evolved over the past 12 months.

The Art of Community: Rural SC, a creative community development initiative of the South Carolina Arts Commission (SCAC), prioritized its efforts in creativity + public health as numbers of COVID-19 infections and deaths rose across the country from March 2020 until now. Collaborating with multidisciplinary artist Amiri Geuka Farris, the initiative’s team created a series of posters that amplified safety and well-being messaging throughout the pandemic. Last month, just as vaccines became available, the initiative released its fifth of five posters reminding the public to “Plan Your Vaccine.” All posters are available in both English and Spanish versions.

As part of its cross-sector initiative, SCAC has deepened relationships with partners in the public health sector, as well as with local communities of creatives, grass-roots leaders and organizations. All have worked together to help raise awareness and promote health and safety measures through the pandemic, share resources for reopening schools, restaurants and offices, and more. Built upon partnership and collaboration with a focus on creativity, this poster series has relayed relevant messages that are of public value to South Carolinians.
