Maine: SMART Program
The SMART (Schools Make Arts Relevant Today) grants of the Maine Arts Commission (MAC) fund both school-based and after-school programs that involve underserved populations and youth at risk. Schools, arts organizations and community institutions may apply for up to $10,000 for programs that engage students (grades preK-12), artists and teachers in meaningful arts programs. The SMART program also provides flexibility in project design, supporting the activities that are best suited to a unique community or educational setting. Past projects have taken the form of residencies, workshops, performances, exhibition tours, traditional arts demonstrations or mentorships. Priority is given to programs that have the planning and leadership in place to be sustainable over time and to raise the visibility of arts education in the local community.
