Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What are some good resources to consult about cultural tourism?

Answer: A good place to begin is www.culturalheritagetourism.org, an on-line resource for organizations and individuals who are developing, marketing or managing cultural tourism programs at the state or local level. Check this site regularly for cultural heritage tourism resources and funding announcements. Be sure to browse current and archived issues of “Cultural Heritage Tourism News” for profiles of projects and initiatives from around the nation.

“A Position Paper on Cultural & Heritage Tourism” is another good resource. This 2006 report, developed by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, outlines the benefits of cultural tourism and summarizes the components of successful strategies. Download the paper at: http://www.pcah.gov/pdf/05WhitePaperCultHeritTourism.pdf

Cultural tourism also is an integral component of many states’ creative economy efforts. Visit NASAA’s Creative Economy Resource Center to browse special initiatives and grant programs designed to foster statewide economic development through the arts.
