Question: Do any state arts agencies offer professional development or career assistance funding to artists?

Answer: Yes. More than a dozen state arts agencies offer financial assistance to artists to enhance their management skills and support other kinds of career assistance. Specific program goals and eligibility criteria vary among states, but some common activities supported through these grants include:

  • Study with a master artist or mentor
  • Portfolio preparation
  • Development of marketing materials
  • Travel costs and registration fees for conferences, workshops or other training sessions
  • Business plan development
  • Special opportunities to perform or present
