The arts are an important vehicle through which America’s communities share their histories, reflect on their experiences, preserve their cultural heritage and commemorate important civic milestones. As 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence, both the arts and state arts agencies are at the forefront of state efforts to honor this occasion.

Most state legislatures or governors have established official semiquincentennial commissions charged with organizing and promoting state celebrations. State arts agency leaders often are members of these commissions and related committees. Using a blend of state legislative and federal funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, state arts agencies are creating special commemorative initiatives and providing grant support to many 250th activities at the local level.
