Ohio: Artists with Disabilities Access Program
Recognizing the importance of creative expression by artists of all abilities as essential to community life, the Ohio Arts Council (OAC) offers the Artists with Disabilities Access Grant Program (ADAP). The program is designed to remove obstacles that may hinder artists with disabilities from fully participating in and contributing to Ohio’s diverse arts scene. The program helps make Ohio a more inclusive and accessible place in which to pursue a creative career.
ADAP provides grants tailored to meet the specific needs of individual artists with disabilities for various artistic endeavors, including visual arts, performing arts, literary arts and more. Funds up to $2,500 and $500, respectively, are awarded to professional and emerging artists. The program describes professional artists as individuals who devote a major portion of their time to creating, practicing, performing or teaching their chosen art form and who receive some type of monetary support from this endeavor. Emerging artists are individuals who have consistently worked in their chosen art form for more than three years, have demonstrated strong artistic potential and want to develop their careers. Funds may be used for a variety of career development activities (reaching new audiences, developing new creative skills and marketing) as well as equipment purchases under $1,500, materials, services, and rental fees for equipment or facilities. To minimize barriers to support that artists with disabilities may experience, no cash match is required and OAC provides customized technical assistance and accessibility accommodations for applicants.
In addition to funding, the program offers professional development opportunities for artists with disabilities. Webinars and workshops provide invaluable resources and guidance, equipping artists with the tools they need to thrive in their respective fields. By fostering a community of collaboration and mentorship, the program helps artists build networks, share experiences and navigate the unique challenges often faced by artists with disabilities.
