North Dakota: STE[A]M Team Program
Because the North Dakota Council on the Arts (NDCA) knows that STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education enhanced by the integration of the arts is key to nurturing both sides of the brain and to preparing whole students for the 21st century, it supports STEAM education through financial assistance as well as professional development leadership. NDCA’s STE[A]M Team program awards grants of $6,000 to teacher-artist teams designing and implementing an interdisciplinary STEM curriculum incorporating art and/or language arts, history, social studies and geography. Funding may be used to cover planning costs, artist and consultant fees, supplies, field trips, and workshop expenses, among other things. Any certified preK-12 teacher, artist or nonprofit arts group working within a school may apply. Grants may be renewed for up to three years, but require a $1,500 annual match from the participating school. To facilitate the curricular work of artist and teacher partners, and to foster ongoing collaborations between them, NDCA assigns an instructional coach to each STE[A]M Team who works with the group over three years to increase capacity to teach in and through the arts.
