Colorado: Space to Create, Colorado

Space to Create, Colorado is a state-driven effort to develop affordable housing and work space for artists and arts organizations. The brand new initiative—led by Colorado Creative Industries (CCI) in partnership with the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, History Colorado, the Boettcher Foundation and the consulting firm Artspace—will develop mixed-use buildings that merge affordable live/work space for artists and their families with space for creative enterprises and organizations that serve critical community needs. Over the next eight years, the effort will complete nine projects in small towns and isolated mountain communities throughout Colorado. By yoking the vitality of local creative communities and the expertise of public, private and philanthropic stakeholders, each project will be tailored to meet specific community needs through successful place-making strategies. CCI and its state partners launched Space to Create, Colorado to address housing shortages and less-than-vibrant economies in rural areas and to demonstrate the power of rural creative place making.
