Puerto Rico: Cultura Rodante

In the aftermath of Hurricane María in September 2017, communities in Puerto Rico face steep hurdles. Utilities, transportation and communications remain disrupted and many cultural and civic venues are damaged and have yet to resume programming. The Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña (ICP), concerned about the mental and emotional health of populations affected by the hurricane, is making the arts a prominent feature of reconstruction efforts. Cultura Rodante (Culture on Wheels) presents arts programming in neighborhoods most deeply affected by the disaster. This initiative, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, facilitates free performances, film screenings and arts education workshops for children and adults. Priority sites include shelters, public plazas, community facilities and senior centers. Since its launch in October 2017, the initiative has reached more than 75 sites, held 164 events and impacted 35,375 persons. Cultura Rodante programming helps participants come to terms with their experiences. At a time when many families are coping with displacement, the program also reinforces community cohesion and pride in Puerto Rico’s resolve and shared heritage.
