Congress and President Unable to Agree on Funding Legislation, Shutdown Begins

January 20, 2018
From: Isaac Brown, Legislative Counsel
Vol. 18:01As of 12:01 a.m. today, the federal government has no appropriation of funding from Congress. As a result, a partial federal government shutdown is now in effect. Most federal offices—including the National Endowment of Arts—are closed. The shutdown comes after weeks of negotiations between President Trump and congressional leaders. How long the shutdown will last is unclear at this time. Members of Congress are expected to negotiate throughout the weekend, and a vote can be called whenever an agreement is reached.
