Arts Controversies: Be Prepared

October 4, 2017

NASAA is pleased to announce the release of a new edition of our Practical Advocate series! Communicating about Arts Controversies is a new resource to help the arts field address controversial artworks. Although arts controversies don’t flare up often, when they do occur they can ignite a lot of media attention and can present high-stakes public relations, programmatic and political challenges.

To help you navigate such situations, Communicating about Arts Controversies offers practical guidance on:

  • getting prepared for controversy,
  • crisis communications tactics, and
  • setting a tone for constructive civic dialogue.

We hope that you’ll never face this kind of event, but it’s important to be ready―and NASAA is here to help! We’re sharing this guide with state arts agencies and regional arts organizations as well as state arts advocacy groups.

To make more advocacy tips easy to access, NASAA has made all our state and federal advocacy resources and policy briefs available (for free) via our website. Make sure you’ve equipped your members with these other editions of The Practical Advocate:

Thanks for being an arts champion!
